Didactic workshop: The bare mouthpiece

For brass musicians: Taught by Toni Romera

A training space for Professional and Superior conservatories, courses, teachers, or advanced level students.

With a didactic and practical approach, together, we will explore the role of the mouthpiece and how you can make it an ally, instead of a hindrance in your training or musical performance.

We will talk about the air you blow, the lip vibration, the measurements and shapes of the mouthpiece, its relationship with the instrument... and how every little change can influence your sound, articulation, flexibility, the high or low registers.

Small details that make a big difference.

Note: The didactic workshop can be carried out with all instruments of the brass family

How is it structured?

There are several options, the one I recommend is to divide the workshop into two parts:

An initial session only with the teachers, and a second common part with the participating musicians.

First part · Training with teachers

Approximate duration: 1 hour

In this first session I work directly with the teachers.

We talk about how the mouthpiece works from the acoustic point of view, what signals to observe in the sound to identify possible problems, how lip vibration , the air flow, the proportions, the internal measurements of the mouthpiece, and its relationship with the instrument influence.

Provide criteria to detect when a technical problem may be related to the mouthpiece or is just a technical problem of the student that will need work.

With real examples and explanations applicable to the classroom.

The goal is that, before moving on to practice, teachers have clear tools to identify difficulties, better support their students, and make the most of the applied part of the workshop.

Second part · Practical work with students.

Approximate duration: 1.30 hours

We work with real cases, the musician plays and what happens is analyzed live.

From there, we explain why certain difficulties appear and what solutions can be proposed: from a change or modification of the mouthpiece to technical adjustments in the way of playing.

The session is dynamic and the content is expanded and adjusted as different cases arise, and everything is explained with clear examples applicable to the musician's daily life.

At the end, we open a space to share impressions, resolve doubts, and contrast points of view among all participants.
